Cognos Solutions Implementation Methodology
The Cognos Solutions Implementation Methodology (SIM) is designed to ensure
successful and repeatable Cognos deployments. It is a step-by-step guide used
by Cognos consultants, partners, and customers around the globe to efficiently
and successfully implement Cognos solutions.
Cognos developed this methodology to achieve a single goal
– successful deployments, at any level, anywhere in your organization.
Core values include:
- Minimizes risk: using proven practices and the widely accepted V-Model
- Scalable, enterprise-ready: expand your user base from tens to tens
of thousands
- Comprehensive: ongoing monitoring and performance tuning
- Drives customer success: deliver project success from the initial
deployment and beyond
Implementation Roadmaps
- Because configuration and deployment procedures vary according to product line, particularly in the design and build phases, Cognos has developed different implementation roadmaps. >

Cognos SIM Toolkit
- The Cognos SIM toolkit is an application that organizes material for a
project in a clear and concise fashion and enables collaboration and customization
throughout a project.
Phases and Deliverables
- The Cognos SIM follows five fully defined phases. Each phase is overseen
by a project management function that ensures consistent and co-ordinated
communication and collaboration.

Analyze
- Define what the solution needs to accomplish, both in terms of features
and non-functional attributes (performance, usability, etc.)
- Obtain agreement between all parties about these requirements
Design
- Define all solution components and their dependencies
- Identify resources
- Install a development environment
Build
- Iterative development cycle based on the V-Model
- Multi-environment testing and validation plan on the methodology
Deploy
- Create a plan to run and maintain the solution
- Establish a support schedule
- Migrate solution to production environment
- Configure as necessary for a successful deployment (security, scheduling,
and third party applications)
- Communicate the deployment to the business
user audience
Operate
- Maintenance checkpoints after roll out to facilitate a successful
use of the system
- Back up and data restoration
- Managing problems, performing periodic cleanup, performing fine tuning
- Monitoring redeploying systems as necessary
